Paradox Series: Between Gesture and Image

The Paradox Series is built on tension. Each work begins as an abstract composition created through rapid, decisive gestures. These marks are not sketches. They are events. I preserve the intensity of the present rather than pursuing a perfected form.

Suspension Before Resolution

Instead of resolving into representation, the Paradox Series holds the moment just before stabilization. Forms emerge and dissolve. Density gathers but does not become object. Because of this restraint, the work remains suspended at the edge of legibility.

As a result, perception slows. The viewer does not decode an image. They inhabit a condition.

Ma and Ensō: Naming the Interval

Some works include suffixes such as Ma or Ensō. The term Ma refers to an active interval — a charged relational space where tension remains alive. It is not emptiness. It is presence between elements.

Ensō evokes the circular gesture found in calligraphic practice. Here, it functions as trace rather than symbol. The circle is not decorative. It records containment and continuity.

Atmosphere as Temperature

Colour functions as temperature rather than description. Tonal restraint moderates intensity. Light does not reveal a scene; it thickens the surface. Consequently, the work resists narrative and stabilizes as atmosphere.

Tasteful Attraction and the Pedagogy of the Gaze

Alongside the abstract works, selected compositions are translated into academic interpretations within the parallel body of work Tasteful Attraction. These images adopt familiar visual codes — serene landscapes, contemplative figures, harmonious settings.

I do not reject this language. On the contrary, I explore it sincerely. Such images are designed to please. They create comfort and emotional stability. It is difficult to oppose them.

However, when placed beside abstraction, their mechanisms become visible. This dialogue forms what I call a pedagogy of the gaze. The academic image attracts immediately. The abstract work asks for duration. Between the two, awareness emerges.

Material Presence

Works from the Paradox Series are produced as limited edition giclée prints on archival Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper. The material choice reinforces tonal depth and long-term stability.

These works are not conceived as decoration. They function as anchoring presences within a space. Over time, they do not change. The viewer’s pace does.
